CANYON LAKE, TX – 96 anglers showed up for an unexpected breezy evening, at least it started off that way with winds blowing 15-25mph at the release of the boats. However; the wind didn’t last long and for many, neither did the bite. Just as the sun started to fall so did the wind and it continued all the way to weigh in. What didn’t fall were the 2017 and 2018 Anglers of the Year, Thomas Howe & Phillip Thompson. With only 4 fish they were able to secure the win by just over an ounce anchored by a solid 5.70lb fish that the team caught just before dark in 12-15ft of water. The team focused on stick ups that are found on nearly 90% of Canyon’s shoreline and were throwing soft plastics. The team said they caught many fish and just had to weed through the small ones to get their 4 fish. Phillip and Thomas took home a payday of just over $800 with the win.

Finishing in the money for the 2nd week in a row and narrowly missing out on their first Thursday Nighters win, was Steve Vance and Donnie Marshall in 2nd place with 10.45lbs. Unlike the rest of the field, Steve and Donnie got something going with moving baits in the 5-6’ range around stickups. Steve and Donnie didn’t have any big fish, but they culled all evening to weigh in 5 solid healthy fish that earned them $460.

Although there is said to be light at the end of the tunnel per the Texas Parks and Wildlife biologist, Canyon is currently fishing tough. There are bunches of fish being caught by most anglers but the avg. weight dropped this week to 1.60 pounds making it the 2nd lowest weight average we have seen so far this year. As Canyons clarity continues to improve (or from a fishermans perspective, gets worse) light line and small baits have been said to be key for getting bites by most anglers, but it comes at a cost. Light line, and the structure that bass tend to hang around are covered with zebra mussels that slice through fishing line making anglers 2nd guess whether the additional bites and constant retying are worth it. The winners this week were at the other end of the spectrum and said they were throwing heavy fluorocarbon line to combat the zebra mussels sharp blade like shells and it paid off for them, at least this week.
