CANYON LAKE, TX – With minimal wind, sunny skies, and temps in the uppers 70’s at the release of the boats, one would be hard pressed to complain about the weather…except maybe an angler. With the nice weather came clear water, high pressure, and skittish fish. With so many teams adapting to and relying on the wind in recent weeks, many had to make a change this week. As it has been all season long, there were more new winners as Jason Olivo and Joey Rodriguez topped 111 anglers with 12.49 pounds to get their first Thursday Nighters win in only the third Thursday Nighter they have ever fished! Jason and Joey said they concentrated on shallow fish throwing structure bugs around brush and rock and picked up their first fish and the big bass of the tournament weighing in 6.19 pounds early in the evening. They stuck with it and were able to fill out their limit and cull 3 times after dark. In only 3 tournaments fished, the team has already weighed in 12 fish for 25.15 pounds. They collected $915 for their first place finish and an additional $290 for Big Bass.

2nd place went to Floyd Pace and Eric Shedrock. It is the 3rd time in the money for this team so far in 2018 and their 2nd top 3 finish. The team focused on deep brush piles in 25-30 ft of water throwing finesse baits. They caught 8 keepers total with only two coming after dark. The team stayed put and fished slow and only fired up the big engine twice all night, once at takeoff and the other when it was time to go back to the weigh in. Floyd and Eric collected $540 for their 2nd place finish.

3rd place went to the father and son team of Craig and Steve Shirley. Craig and Steve come to the scales every week with fish and this week it earned them their 2nd top 3 finish of the season weighing in a limit that tipped the scales at 11.35 pounds and winning them $280. They were fishing in 12-15 of water throwing soft plastics around deep trees.

Some teams have not been able to get bit shallow all year. Some teams have caught fish shallow all year. Many teams now are fishing deep, however 2 of the last 3 winners have been fishing shallow. There are obviously good fish shallow but they appear to be more scattered. Most of the winners each week are fishing deep ledges and points with c-rigged and tx-rigged soft plastics. Dropshot hasn’t been working much as of late but swimbaits shallow is still producing and a few fish have started to take a liking to topwaters like the whopper plopper and spook. Several smallmouth have been weighed in during the recent weeks and several were weighed in tonight that were long and skinny, which appear that they are now post spawn.
