CANYON LAKE, TX – The evening started with storms rolling in bringing high winds and heavy rain to the 55 teams ready for another good pay day on Canyon Lake. Drawing boat #7 but rolling in late due to the storms, was the team of Josh Rhodes and Chris Studinger. After getting their live wells checked, Chris and Josh didn’t get to leave the release area til just after 6:45pm. Things sill weren’t looking up for them once they got to their first spot as Chris mentioned that their rods were a complete tangled mess with a drop shot the only rod that didn’t need to be cut and retied. So the drop shot is what they fished with and lucky for them they did. The team said the drop shot was the key to their success throwing it in 10-15’ of water. Once the sun went down the team said things really got going and were catching keeper fish on nearly every cast including 1 big fish that broke them off just at the boat. In the end that fish didn’t matter, as the team weighed in 12.32 pounds to top 105 anglers and also took down Big Bass with a 4.46 pounder. Chris and Josh made out in this one as they took home $890 for 1st, $275 for Big Bass and another $500 in Skeeter Real Money from fishing out of their Yamaha powered Skeeter which brought their total winnings for the night to $1670. It was only the 4th time Josh has fished a Thursday Nighter and Chris’s 3rd and already the team have weighed in 2 limits and have a Thursday Nighters win.

2nd place went to the dynamic dou and long overdue team of Tony Thompson and Mike Valerio. Probably not a lot of peace and quiet in this boat but the fish didn’t seem to mind. Drawing boat #6 the team ran to their first spot and immediately started catching fish. Tony said a wobble head of some kind rigged with a craw bait did most of the heavy lifting before dark, then he switched to a straight tailed worm after dark to keep the fish biting. They also mentioned catching a couple on flukes in 8 inches of water to help them cull up to their final weight of 11.44 pounds to take 2nd place and win $500. Tony credits his sponsors for helping the team bring in their first limit of 2017 and went on to thank the makers of duct tape, quality lead sinkers, Walmart’s fishing department and bailing wire for keeping them on the water and on the fish.

3rd place went to the team of Steve Maple and Rusty Reedy in only their 4th Thursday Nighters tournament of 2017. Last week they were close and weighed in 4 for 7.94 pounds, but this week they were able to fill out their limit and weigh five fish for 9.35lbs. Steve and Rusty were also one of the last boats out drawing boat #51. Steve and Rusty said they bite for them got better as the evening went on and topwaters did most of their damage and they won $270 for their great 3rd place finish.

After the storms passed many experienced better fishing, and the later if got the better it got for most teams. Only 4 limits were weighed in, however a lot of teams reported to have caught a lot of fish and thought it was going to be a slug fest out there but just like everyone else, most of the fish the other teams caught were also small. A lot of fish moved back in to the shallow stick ups as well as some of the hard woods on the upper end of the lake, but most of the check cashers were fishing main lake drains and points in deeper water.
